Knauss Families of Dudelsheim

The largest part of this site includes descendants of Johann Ludwig Knauss, who came to America in 1723, and his wife, Anna Margaretha Gerlach. Ludwig was born in Dudelsheim, which is near Budingen in Hesse, Germany, northeast of Frankfurt and not far from it. It is actually very close to Wurttemberg, as well.

In Dudelsheim, we have the family back to the birth of Peter Knauss in 1535, supposedly in Dudelsheim. Could Peter Knauss possibly have actually been a son of Michael Knauss of Wurttemberg? At present, we have no way of knowing. Dudelsheim is around 300 miles from the Neckar valley, where the other earliest-known Knauss family was located.

Third Generation

D-III-1. Peter KNAUSS
Capt. of Militia and Farmer. During the 30 year war of 1618-1648, Peter served in the Imperial Bavarian and Swedish Armies. He survived and returned to Dudelsheim in 1653. Peter became a farmer and on 4-4-1664 was appointed capt. of the militia by Ct. Johann Ernst of Ysenburg and Buedingen. The first day on the job, he and his militia provided crowd control during the trial of a local witch. It is not clear what happened, but during the previous year on 9-7-1663, Margarette Kranz--called Black Margaret, was beheaded in Dudelsheim.
